Top tips for settling into a new academic year

Now we’re through the disruption of the initial week back to school, here are our top tips for settling into the academic year ahead. These five suggestions are designed to help you make the most of what will hopefully be a more ‘normal’ academic year.

  • Get organised

Many students don’t ‘get organised’ until later in the year by retrospectively going back through their notes, trying to make sense of it all. If you organise things right from the start, in whatever way works best for you, things are made a lot easier further down the line. This might involve using folders, a diary, colour coded systems etc. – there’s no right or wrong way, it just has to make sense to you.

  • Take your time

So much disruption over the previous two academic years, will make settling back into old routines a lengthy process. Don’t expect to instantly get back into the swing of things and don’t put yourself under too much pressure to do so. Things like extra-curricular activities can slowly be built back into your schedule when you feel ready.

  • Think bigger picture

While it’s important to try your best in every subject, think about what really matters most to you. Your wellbeing is something that should never be sacrificed, so you need to have time in your day to relax and unwind too. It’s certainly worth prioritising the core curriculum, especially at the start of the year. This is clearly due to the fact that English, Maths, and Science are key subjects that underlie many others.

  • Make time to relax

It’s very important to have a balance between work and play so allowing us to create time to relax and take care of our mental wellbeing. The Swedish have a wonderful word for this: ‘lagom’, which roughly translates to ‘moderation.’ The idea is that, if we relax and challenge ourselves in moderation, we will find our own personal balance that enables us to perform at our best.
